I've known many people who, while they lacked aptitude in a certain area, totally 'oozed' confidence! They may be based on a unique experience you had which caused you to jot down that message in your head yourself. Let's say you tried designing a bookcase once but it didn't look very good when you finished it. Therefore, in your mind you believe you're no good at woodwork and will never try again. But you could have acknowledged that this wasn't too bad for your initial attempt and that you'd perhaps improve with experience.
Your own attitude is the thing that will carry you to triumph, or defeat you before you even begin.
If you don't trust you can do it - odds are very high that you won't. And when you believe all the unfavorable messages from the past, you might as well build a brick wall between you and your goals. (And remember, you fail 100% of the opportunities you don't even go for!)
However if you believe you could do it, if you can imagine yourself in your mind doing it, chances are very strong that you will be successful!
There's a saying: "Change the way you look at things and the things you look at would change." (The half full - half empty glass is an example of this!)
